 Cold Steel Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:23 PM
Category: Quake IV

Over on Doom Wad Station there's a review for a singleplayer, Quake 4 level called Cold Steel.
Gameplay was also quite good, with health, ammo - etc... finely balanced throughout the game. There were times when I thought for sure I was done for but I suddenly found JUST enough health and ammo to get my through.
Check out Cold Steel.

 Checking Out zerOnet
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:34 PM
Category: Quake IV

Due to a visit to Blues News a Doom 3 engine (Quake 4, Doom 3, RoE, Prey) mod was revealed that is called zerOnet which makes the network side of things more efficient.
zerOnet is a small modification to games that use the Doom3 engine which cuts game-side network traffic down by an average of 50 percent. System-side network code can't be changed with game SDK's, so the reduction only applies to the game "snapshot" message sizes. The new snapshot sizes range from 10% to 90% of their original size without changing any of the original code's reading/writing data, all the bit sizes are the same and no functions have been swapped with smaller versions (eg "WriteShort" instead of "WriteLong").
Check out Zeronet.

Heretic Review Section On DWS & Kaoz Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:42 PM
Category: Heretic

Doom Wad Station now has a new Heretic Map Reviews section where you can find a review of a singleplayer map called Kaoz.
I did have a favorite level, I ain't saying which so that I'd spoil it--- but it's a part in this particular map where there's a maze full of Centaurs, then the maze walls become lifts while wooden crusher poles come dowm from above, and you'll have to fight those snake things (forgot what they were called) that use wands to lob rapid fire blue fireballs at you.
That stuff is on Doom Wad Station.

 Captain America Skin
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:11 AM
Category: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Here is a pretty snazzy looking Captain America Skin by Crossbolt that is designed for Jedi Academy.
Right here we have Captain America. Never really was a fan of him, but I do know some about him. This skin from what I see is pretty accurate. The star, the blue cloth (which had fiber detail!), the cap, everything. I applaud the author, many superhero reskins are either inaccurate or not that good at all.
Once again, thanks to Jedi Knight Files for that file.

 CTF Level EF Dust
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:27 AM
Category: Voyager: Elite Force

EF DUST is a CTF map for Elite Force and is designed by SpaZe.
Time for a fragging good time! Make sure your weapons are charged, and don't forget to eat a healthy breakfast! SpaZe is back and he dropped off a few files for the community to enjoy; The first EF DUST is set out doors, and is maze-like...be sure to take full advantage of the objects that are present throughout the map, as these will offer excellent cover from your opponents, as well as give you the prime advantage to ambush the other team!
Unfortunately there's no screenies posted yet, so downgrab EF DUST at your own risk over on Elite Force Files. :P

 Deathmatch Level Fool's Run Remix
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:46 PM
Category: Quake IV

Head on over to the Map Factory and take a look at Fool's Run Remix, which is a Quake 4, deathmatch level by xfoo.
This is the 1.2 release of everyone's favorite (most hated) large q4 1v1 map. There are 2 major changes with this release. First, the maps addon.conf and def files are now correct. This means the map will no longer crash servers. Also the auto-download now works and the map will not show up twice in the menu system.
Go grab some Fool's Run Remix.

 Multiplayer Level AWP Jungle 2
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:57 PM
Category: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix

AWP Jungle 2 (2.0) is a Soldier Of Fortune 2, multiplayer map by Stanthrax that has a jungle theme and is a remake (I have no idea what it's a remake of).
Thats now been sorted so you can all enjoy this nice remake. The map supports DM, TDM, CTF, CCTF, ELIM, INF game types and will host 32 players max. As the map name suggests game play takes place in a jungle theme, there are plenty of places for cover above ground and some underground sections are there too.
Check that out on Soffiles.

 Deathmatch Level Atlantis of Angels
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:12 PM
Category: Quake IV

Ok lets go back to Map Factory to check out a Quake 4, deathmatch level that goes by the name, Atlantis of Angels.
A map that utilized the Q4 physics with the map itself influencing the players strategies and tactics. I wanted to make a map based on close combat with the oppurtunity to make some amazing frags. Also as you may notice the path to the flag room is made so the shortest and quickest path is harder and dangerous while the longest and furthest path is easier to get to and safer.
Check out Atlantis of Angels by ^War^Angel^.

 Deathmatch Level Sturmernte
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:06 PM
Category: Quake IV

Over on Map Factory there's a Quake 4, deathmatch level that's called Sturmernte by level designer cha0s.
Sturmernte" is a small and very fast Quake 4 Tourney map. It was build from scratch in about 3 month - which is pretty fast for me. This is my first Quake 4 map, so I had to learn some stuff. In hindsight, the map should have a much better performance, which doesn't mean that it's bad, but that I could have planned it more wisely in some places.
Check out that Sturmernte level.

 Hydroball Arena
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:01 PM
Category: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

I'm not sure what a Hydroball is but Guss uploaded his Underground Hydroball Arena to the Jedi Knight Files site.
Like almost all Hydroball maps, this map has an arena area and an observation area. The map itself appeared very spartan, because when you enter the map it looks bland. At least until you turn on dynamic glow, then the map lightens up a little bit. But the biggest thing with this map is it’s simplicity.
So check that out on Jedi Knight Files.

 360 Wolfenstein Info
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:59 PM
Category: General

Over on Computer and Video Games they posted a Id Software talks 360 Wolfenstein article.
Id's Kevin Cloud said in an interview that the company and Raven (who has already collaborated on Quake 4) "are working together to take advantage of all the graphic capabilities that the Xbox 360 has to offer, and what we're doing with Wolfenstein is creating this one, large empire that is seamlessly loaded to the player as he explores his world."
I guess we have to wait to see if this new Wolfenstein will also be developed for the PC. As of right now I'm not too bloody clear on the matter.

 MP Church
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:25 PM
Category: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix

mp_church is a Soldier Of Fortune 2, multiplayer map by Sir Paul that is based on a map from Medal of Honor.
The game play takes part in a destroyed village, which leads onto a large church. There are plenty of bombed out buildings for you to explore and plenty of cover outside to aid in all game types, some extra crates provide cover for CTF gametype only.
Check that out on Soffiles.

 Two Versions Of Vulcans Forge
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:43 AM
Category: Voyager: Elite Force

Chilla-X released two versions of his Vulcans Forge map for Voyager Elite Force.
This download contains two versions of the map "Vulcans_Forge," however the maps are not completely identical. One is for deathmatch and the other for CTF. The map is based on a map of the same name for the Nintendo 64 game "Turok 2". Both maps consist of a series of rooms and corridors with the odd court yard and a lava pit.
You can find that on Elite Force Files.

 Nivalis (v2)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:12 PM
Category: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Nivalis (v2) is a FFA level for Jedi Academy by Watcher
The map consists of two areas: a small, indoor section, and a much larger outdoor section. The indoor section is secluded from the snow falling outside, but as I mentions it is relatively small, so you will be quite vulnerable. Outside is a different story. The snow reduces visibility, and even despite the glowing lightsaber it's very difficult to see things at a distance. It will be far easier for you to sneak up on your foe. Of course it's easier for them to do the same, as well.
That map is on Jedi Knight Files.

 Belfast Arena
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:21 PM
Category: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix

Here is a multiplayer map that's called Belfast Arena for Soldier Of Fortune 2.
This is a small sized map created for mainly CTF, however the map supports DM TDM ELIM INF CTF CCTF game types and will host 20 players. The game play takes place in a square type arena with some underground sections and plenty of cover above ground.
That map is available on Soffiles.

 Drakseye Skin
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:25 PM
Category: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Drakseye is a skin for Jedi Academy by WK Baldwin -Cable- and here is a bit of whet the review person had to say about it:
This reskin is very simple, but there are also varients. Each of which is a very simple conserved reskin. The armor is a bit dark and hard to see detail, but that's not too much of a problem. The reskins were done well, and it's clear there was effort on the author's part.
That skin is on Jedi Knight Files.

 Counterblast
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:03 PM
Category: Quake IV

Over on Map Factory there's a Quake 4, deathmatch level that goes by the name Counterblast by level designer mrlycon.
This map was the second official map I made for quake4, and I guess it could be more optimized performance vise, and I have already been using too much time on item placement, and I don't want to be working on this map forever. It was made in just a cupple of days, but I have spent very much time polishing and perfecting the item placement, so it should play very well now. Anyway, the map is very balanced for 1on1 and it works well in Free For All, you don't want to be too many in there tho, very fun map to play.
Check out Counterblast!

 FragoBhoPoPolis Isn't A Strogg Disease
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:33 AM
Category: Quake IV

FragoBhoPoPolis is a Quake 4 multiplayer map, designed by MrLyCon that has a space theme.
We started to play Quake4 at work one day and I just felt like doing a DM level, so I started a level but before it could be finished, I wanted to do a spacemap, just because it's faster and a good way to learn the editor. This level is the first thing I made in Q4Radiant so I had to get used to alot of different things but it's nice to keep up with the technology.
That map is available thanks to Quake 4 Files.

 RPG Type 13
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:28 PM
Category: Voyager: Elite Force

RPG Type 13 is a RPG type of map for Elite Force (requires RPG-X 1.0.1).
SimmerALPHA was recently contacted by Aobob; He had problems with his computer and a RPG map he had made was gathering virtual dust, so he asked him if he could complete it. It was one of Aobob's first maps and although the quality of the mapping wasn't the best, the design, shape and size was perfect. So SimmerALPHA added details, new textures everything to make it up-to-date with the newest generation of RPG maps.
That's all on Elite Force Files.

 Luke Pilot Skin
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:25 PM
Category: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Over on Jedi Knight Files you can find a Luke Pilot skin by Generalsteve for Jedi Academy. Here is a bit of what the reviewer had to say about the skin:
This reskin of Luke attempts to turn him into his Episode 5 self. You know, the "Episode 5 self" that wears the X-wing pilot jumpsuit. Now given the obvious restrictions/inaccuracies of the JA Luke model, in regards to what a pilot looks like, this has actually been done quite well. Obviously the skirt kind of makes it look a bit silly from certain angles, and the life support pack on the torso is missing.
Check that Luke Pilot skin out on Jedi Knight Files.

 TOS Spectre
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:17 PM
Category: Voyager: Elite Force

TOS_Spectre is a deathmatch level by SimmerALPHA for Elite Force.
This map is a pretty good map if you haave some time to kill and you are in the mood for some mindless deathmatching; As with most deathmatches, the experience depends mostly on the competition, however, I hink you will enjoy this map as you run around dodging phaser blasts!
That's all on Elite Force Files.

 Tiger Tank Prefab
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:36 AM
Category: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix

If you happen to level design for Soldier Of Fortune 2 and could make use of a tank model, Sir Paul released a pretty nice Tiger Tank Prefab.
My new map needed a German Tank in it, so i did some searching for pictures on the internet, and here you have it. Not that far away from the real thing i suppose.
You can get that download thank to Soffiles. By the way, one of the comments over there questioned the exhaust pipes on the rear of the Tiger. I know from building a plastic kit of the tank ages ago, that the Tiger was designed to submerge in deep water, so the exhaust was made to stick up above the surface. However, I don't know how successful they were in using this feature...

 HS Gweth Kelia (v2)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:38 PM
Category: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

The featured skin over on Jedi Knight Files is HS_Gweth_Kelia (v2).
This model is basically meant to be almost the ultimate female model that will replace Leela and hurt her feelings and make her cry, where I shall promptly laugh and then cleave through both their skulls. The result of this effort? Hapslash quality. Need I say more? Okay fine, it's really good, but it's not really not that thrilling to me. However, I'm sure the female players are rejoicing like crazy and will probably roar at me for not giving a rave review of this sensational model.
Check out HS_Gweth_Kelia (v2).

What Ever It Is, That Girl Put A Spell On Me
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:51 PM
Category: Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix

I'm pretty sure this isn't the PurpleHaze Jimi Hendrix was singing about. Anyhow this one is a multiplayer map for Soldier Of Fortune II, designed by PuRpLeHaZe rd.
The map is based on an urban town theme, containg tall buildings ideal for the snipers out there. The map also contains several secrets, jump pads teleports and a mine field.
Soffiles is where that level is waiting for download.

Ubilitus Review On Doom Wad Station
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:04 PM
Category: Quake IV

Bob Larkin of the Doom Wad Station posted up a review for a Quake 4, singleplayer map that's called Ubilitus in his new Quake 4 Reviews section of the site.
From the moment I installed Quake 4 on my computer, I was hooked. The gameplay was awesome and the environments were incredible. I couldn't get enough. This map brought back that same sense of "bring em on" that I got with the original game.
Check out that Ubilitus review.

 Imperial Luke
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:24 PM
Category: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

StormedTrooper released a Jedi Academy, skin that is called Imperial Luke.
It was only a matter of time before I saw this happen. This answers the question: "What if Luke were imperial?" The result? Luke in imperial outfits. Very basic, very quick, no real work necessary, yet the result was good. All officer ranks are included, along with team skins.
That is on Jedi Knight Files.
