The few simple machines that you have at your disposal can prove to be quite effective:

Catapult:
Attackers can use the catapult to launch explosive barrels to destroy the defender's ramparts and ballistas. The catapult can also be used to launch the attackers over the castle walls.

Ballista:
Ballistas are the primary defense of the castle. Defender's can use the ballistas to destroy the attacker's catapults.
