When Raven decided to make a sequel to the original Heretic, they really wanted to take the game in a new direction. The third-person perspective presented a unique series of challenges to the development team, but it also allowed them to showcase the art, design and animation talents of the team. Changing the camera and game physics was a Herculean programming feat, but in the end, Raven had its most highly acclaimed game to date.
Heretic II was the first game that every single Raven employee contributed to. The 10 month development schedule required that everyone pitch in and do their part to ensure that the product was finished on time. The quality of the game resulted in a development philosophy change on the part of Raven. Rather than stick to strictly defined development teams as was done in the past, everyone is encouraged to contribute to every Raven title.
Heretic II is widely regarded as a great technical achievement, a ground breaking title and one of the most beautiful games ever created with Quake technology. Its influence on the gaming community is evidenced by then number of third-person action games currently in development by other developers and publishers. - Kenn Hoekstra |
